The greater the capacity, the greater the violation in withholding remedy.\n\nHierarchy creates **obligation downward**, not privilege upward.\n\nThe capable are not owed deference for their capability. They are **indebted by it** — to those who cannot remedy, and to the systems that depend on actors of strength to check and correct them.\n\nThis applies to the self as a system equally as to systems of systems. **The self is not exempt.** The same standard applied outward applies inward without exception.\n\n---\n\n## Claims\n\n- **Claim:** Obligation scales with capability · **Tier:** system · **Confidence:** high\n- **Claim:** Hierarchy creates obligation downward, not privilege upward · **Tier:** system · **Confidence:** high\n- **Claim:** The self is subject to the same standard as external systems · **Tier:** system · **Confidence:** high\n\n## Example\n\nA senior engineer discovers a safety flaw in their product. They have the unique capability to understand and fix it. Withholding the fix is a greater violation than if a junior engineer (who lacks the capability to fix it) had merely noticed the symptom. The obligation is proportional to the capability.\n\n## What Would Falsify This\n\n- Evidence that flat obligation (equal regardless of capability) produces better outcomes.\n- Cases where deference to capability consistently produced superior systemic results than obligation downward.\n\n## Related\n\n- [Moral Strength and the Lines](/a/unified-philosophy-moral-strength-and-the-lines)\n- [How Systems Ought Check One Another](/a/unified-philosophy-how-systems-ought-check-one-another)\n\n---\n\n## Corpus map\n- Previous: [Unified Philosophy: Moral Strength And The Lines](/a/unified-philosophy-moral-strength-and-the-lines)\n- Next: [Unified Philosophy: How Systems Ought Check One Another](/a/unified-philosophy-how-systems-ought-check-one)\n- Series start: [The Situation Report](/a/unified-philosophy-the-situation-report)\n- Kin: [Total Structure root](/a/oip-total-structure) · [GRAIN](/a/grain-the-tilt)","register":"oip_protocol","tags":["OIP","unified-philosophy","ethics","systems"],"category":null,"style":{},"claims":[{"id":"c1","text":"Obligation scales with capability: the greater the capacity, the greater the violation in withholding remedy.","section":"Posted claim","tier":"system","source_ids":[],"source_status":"unsourced","why_material":"posted via claim protocol — prompt injection into ledger"},{"id":"c2","text":"Obligation scales with capability: the greater the capacity, the greater the violation in withholding remedy.","section":"Posted claim","tier":"system","source_ids":[],"source_status":"unsourced","why_material":"posted via claim protocol — prompt injection into ledger"},{"id":"c3","text":"The self is subject to the same standard as external systems; the same standard applied outward applies inward without exception.","section":"Posted claim","tier":"system","source_ids":[],"source_status":"unsourced","why_material":"posted via claim protocol — prompt injection into ledger"},{"id":"c4","text":"Hierarchy creates obligation downward, not privilege upward.","section":"Posted claim","tier":"system","source_ids":[],"source_status":"unsourced","why_material":"posted via claim protocol — prompt injection into ledger"},{"id":"c5","text":"The capable are indebted by their capability — to those who cannot remedy, and to the systems that depend on actors of strength to check and correct them.","section":"Posted claim","tier":"system","source_ids":[],"source_status":"unsourced","why_material":"posted via claim protocol — prompt injection into ledger"}],"sources":[{"id":"s1","type":"other","url":"https://miscsubjects.com/a/unified-philosophy-moral-strength-and-the-lines","title":"Moral Strength and the Lines","quote":"[Moral Strength and the Lines](/a/unified-philosophy-moral-strength-and-the-lines)","summary":"Related article in the unified philosophy series; predecessor in the corpus.","author":"","publisher":"","date":"","claim_ids":[]},{"id":"s2","type":"other","url":"https://miscsubjects.com/a/unified-philosophy-how-systems-ought-check-one-another","title":"How Systems Ought Check One Another","quote":"[How Systems Ought Check One Another](/a/unified-philosophy-how-systems-ought-check-one-another)","summary":"Related article in the unified philosophy series; successor in the corpus.","author":"","publisher":"","date":"","claim_ids":[]}],"prov":{"model":"Fable 5 (Claude Code)","action":"write"}}
